A Face to Reframe regularly participates in the global discussions around community development, justice, advocacy and social change and the intersection of faith.
In the tenuous days of getting IRS approval to be an official tax-exempt organization, our paperwork was returned with three pages of questions. The theme? How would we avoid partnering with a known (or unknown) terrorist or conducting a project in a sanctioned country? In an attempt to go about this process on the cheap, avoiding lawyers and accountants and relying on library books and my own stubborn persistence, the pages and pages of government bureaucracy nearly swallowed me whole.
But I emerged with a 501(c)3 letter from the government! A Face to Reframe is an official non-profit!
And none too soon. In just a few weeks our project with Prax(us) begins. I’m working on final project design details and thought I would share the objective:
Youth living in exploitive situations are typically disempowered and marginalized members of society. They are often viewed as perpetuators rather than victims and are especially distrusting of law enforcement. If empowered to identify issues that need to be changed and given a voice into the process of their own advocacy, they are more likely to begin to make changes on a micro level in their own lives. Furthermore, the reality of domestic human trafficking needs to be publicized and the Denver public made more aware of the issue. This project will be a combination of youth empowerment and advocacy.
AFTR will partner with Prax(us) to conduct a three day photography workshop in which 5-10 youth participate. We will provide them with simple digital cameras and some instruction. They will determine the direction the project takes in terms of what story they would like to tell, culminating in a public exhibit to which media, law enforcement, public officials, community organizations, and the public will be invited.
Live in Colorado? Join us for the exhibit on May 27 in downtown Denver! Details to follow.
